The Failure of Israel
Where did the nation go wrong? Where did the nation fail God? It was given to a converted Jew to explain this, and you will find it over in Paul's epistle to the Romans.
Now for the benefit of Bible students, Romans 9, 10, and 11 deal with the nation of Israel. In chapter nine you have Israel's past selection. In chapter ten, you will find Israel's present suspension. Chapter eleven gives to us Israel's prospective salvation.
Chapter nine is an interesting chapter. It shows how God in the past selected this nation, these people, In chapter ten you have a statement concerning Israel's failure. The Apostle Paul, a skilled, educated, loyal Jew, wrote this by inspiration of the Holy Spirit: " Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge." Now here is Isreal's failure: " For they, being ignorant of God's righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God."
That"s where the nation failed. That's where every individual fails, who does not turn to the Lord Jesus Christ. You know we are a self-righteous people. The problem with the average sinner today, is that he feels self-sufficient, there is no need for God, and that builds up a self-rightoeusness which the prophet Isaiah says stinks, like a polluted garment in the nostrils of God.
This is Israel's failure, rejecting the righteousness of God available through Jesus Christ, and going about in their own righteousness. " All our righteousness are as filthy rags." Beloved friends, you and I have nothing to commend us to God tonight; if we got what we deserve, we would all be in hell, not tomorrow morning, we would be there right now, Oh, how we think God for the righteousness He makes available through the Lord Jesus Christ. This has been Israel's failure, so God has set the nation aside.
